We are only 2 months away from ending 2018 and by now you would have already seen how much clutter you’ve accumulated over the past year. You feel the strong urge to clear away the mess yet don’t know where to start or if you can even see the bottom of it.
Decluttering is one of the 4 proven ways to promote a healthy home and healthy mind. Though a mammoth of a task, it’s definitely something worth investing time in so you can begin the next year with a fresh and stress-free home.
The goal of decluttering is not to fully organize or deep clean your entire house. It is merely to clear out surface clutter. You can declutter your entire home in just one day by following these 4 steps:
- Mentally prepare yourself for decluttering
This is the first step and the most important of them all. You have to commit to the task. Make the chore easier by wearing your most comfortable clothes and put on your favorite playlist or podcast.
- Move quickly
Do not spend more than 30 minutes on each room. Once the time limit is up, move on to the next area.
- Categorize clutter
As you sort through your surface clutter, mentally or sticker tag them into these categories:
- Trash (and/or recycle)
- Keep/Relocate
- Donate
- Put Away
Optional:
- Give to a friend
- Repair
- Declutter Room by Room
There is no one size fits all strategy for this but we recommend starting with fairly easy rooms and moving on to clutter-prone areas and throwing in some easier, smaller areas in between.
- Remove trash and donations as soon as possible
Once you’ve sorted through your trash and donation pile, don’t delay disposing of these items to keep your momentum going.
Follow through these 5 steps and you’ll welcome the new year with a cleaner and relaxing home. Be sure to declutter regularly from here on out to avoid going through mountains of mess the next time!
