Summer is a tricky foe for the makeup-loving gal. You want to look perfectly dewy with a gorgeous bronzed glow, but also don’t want to look shiny and oily from the beating sun and the suffocating humidity.
Consequently, we’ve all fallen victim to too much foundation and powder in the summer to blot the shine and just ended up cakey and even oilier.
Celebrity makeup artist Vincent Oquendo shares these 5 makeup mistakes you should avoid making this summer:
Wearing the wrong sunscreen, or wearing no sunscreen at all
Sunscreen is the most important thing in the summer and all women should wear it. But not just any sunscreen – it has to be lightweight and would work well under makeup.
Don’t just rely on your foundation’s SPF content as it is never nearly enough.
Consider getting a separate SPF that won’t oxidize the makeup you wear and change the color of your foundation, which isn’t very pretty for photographs.
Avoiding color
Lots of women tone down the colorful eyeshadows in the summer when it is actually the best time to pull them out! These bright, bold shades are perfect for wearing under a pair of sunglasses or a hat.
Using makeup that smudges easily
It’s quite common to see mascara and eyeliner smudges in the summer what with the excessive heat and humidity causing our lids to become oily and sweaty.
To correct this, use waterproof or water-resistant eyeliners and mascaras that will hold well even until the sunset and ensure your makeup look will last you all day.
Overdoing shimmers
A lot of makeup brands put out summer collections with a lot of shimmer or metallic hints in them. We then use these all over our faces, thinking it will help us get that dewy look.
But in fact, what it does is bring out our skin imperfections. Be strategic with your use of shimmer and metallics and bring out your natural glow without overdoing it.
Skipping Mattifiers
Use a mattifying primer! Swap out your regular primers for ones that have special properties for fighting oil and sheen so you can get that perfect matte canvas without looking cakey at all.
